L’église

Eglise Paroissiale « Notre Dame de Calvias », construite au treizième siècle, pour une population de 600 habitants, lorsque le territoire devient Comtat Venaissin, et Malemort, fiel féodal des « Barons Evêques » de Carpentras. Elle sera agrandie par une quatrième travée en 1750.

Mention sur l’église

A la révolution en 1794, au moment de la période de « la terreur », et de la monté de l’anticléricalisme, la société populaire de Malemort, prend possession de l’église pour ses réunions. Un nouveau culte, prôné par Robespierre, celui de la raison, y est instauré. La marque en reste gravée au fronton de la façade par la devise, « le peuple François reconnaît l’être suprême, et l’immortalité de l’âme », apposée le 9 prairial, ( mai) 1794. Culte éphémère puisque en Juillet 1794, Robespierre sera guillotiné.

Parish Church « Notre Dame de Calvias », built in the thirteenth century, for a population of 600 inhabitants, when the territory became Comtat Venaissin, and Malemort, feudal gall of the « Baron Bishops » of Carpentras. It will be enlarged by a fourth span in 1750.

Note on the church

During the revolution in 1794, at the time of the period of « terror », and the rise of anticlericalism, the popular society of Malemort, took possession of the church for its meetings. A new cult, advocated by Robespierre, that of reason, was established there. The mark remains engraved on the pediment of the facade by the motto, « the François people recognize the supreme being, and the immortality of the soul », affixed on 9 Prairial, (May) 1794. Ephemeral cult since in July 1794 , Robespierre will be guillotined.
