Le lavoir ” du grand portail” nommé à présent ‘’ de la porte de la République’’.

Le lavoir date de 1771, il a été réaménagé successivement en 1773, 1887 (voir document), et 1987 lors de l’aménagement de la place de la République, où l’on a supprimé le petit bassin de la sur verse qui servait à faire une réserve d’eau pour l’arrosage des jardins de certaines habitations privées. Accolé au grand lavoir, il y avait un bassin déversoir des eaux savonneuses. A l’avant du déversoir, un système à vis faisait monter ou descendre une palette devant le trou en fond du lavoir qui permettait de lâcher ou de boucher le petit bassin ( plus de pression pour l’amenée de l’eau, nécessaire pour arroser «  à la raie » à l’aide d’une «  hissade » ou houe, les différents légumes). En plus, un petit travail de changement de palettes dans un regard était nécessaire pour diriger l’eau soit boulevard Félix Gras, soit route de Mazan. Le regard était fermé par une plaque en fonte, ronde, mais très lourde. Il ne fallait pas oublier l’outil pour crocheter la plaque afin de la déplacer. L’approvisionnement en eau de la fontaine et du lavoir dépendait d’un système dû à l’ingéniosité scientifique humaine. Caché dans la colonne de pierre voisine, le système, par gravité, permettait de réguler la pression de l’eau à la fontaine. La plus grande partie de la population pouvait donc venir chercher l’eau aux fontaines avec un seau ou un arrosoir. .

The wash house dates from 1771, it was successively refurbished in 1773, 1887, and in 1987 during the layout of the “Place de la République”  where the small tank was destroyed. The tank was collecting the overflowing waters which were used for watering the gardens of some houses. Next to the big wash house there was a tank for overflowing soapy waters.  In front of the spillway, a screw system was raising or lowering a plank in front of the hole at the bottom of the wash house. This system allowed the water going to the small tank to be released or blocked in order to increase or decrease the water pressure allowing the gardens to be watered.  Besides, the plank needed to be guided to direct the water to the “Boulevard Félix Gras” or to “The route the mazan” The trap was closed by a very heavy iron round cast plate. The plate could only be moved with a tool allowing to hook in it.  The water supply for the fountain and the wash house had been possible thanks to human scientific ingenuity. Hidden in a stone column nearby, the system by gravity enabled the water pressure to be regulated to the fountain.  Most of the population could therefore come and fetch water from the fountain with a bucket or a watering can.
