The place of the penitents
This place used to be the cemetery “outside the walls”. “The walls” was a reference to the fortifications. This cemetery replaced the one which surrounded the church and which had been definitely abandoned in 1685. A chapel had been built there by the community and dedicated to Saint Anne, in gratitude for the protection she had granted to the village during the Plague of 1587. In August 1760, this chapel was lent to The Brotherhood of the White Penitents. Father Esprit Flandrin (1587-1636), parish priest of the village of Blauvac was one of the four founders of the Brotherhood of the White Penitents. The Brotherhood was founded in Malemort on May 15th 1622 under the name of “Our Lady of Mercy”.
In 1776, the White Pénitents built their own chapel next to the one of Saint Anne, and from then on the two chapels merged, and the community kept the cemetery here.
In 1845 a statue dedicated to “Our Lady of Mercy” (Notre Dame de Pitié in French) was bought.
In 1819 the chapel which had been sold and transformed into a sheepfold was bought back. The hope was to restore it thanks to donations, however it did not happen and the chapel was demolished in 1969.
In front of you, you can see a statue and a steeple. They were both part of the chapel. They were saved when it was destroyed and placed here in 1975 when the “Place des Pénitents” was created.

Cette place était le cimetière « hors les murs » succédant à celui qui entourait l’église et qui fut définitivement abandonné en 1685. Une chapelle y avait été construite par la Communauté et dédiée à Sainte Anne, en remerciement de la protection accordée au village lors de la peste de 1587. En Août 1760, l’on prêta cette chapelle à la confrérie des Pénitents Blancs qui en était dépourvue. L’Abbé Esprit Flandrin 1587-1636, curé de Blauvac fut un des quatre fondateurs de la dévote et vénérable « Compagnie des Pénitents Blancs, érigée à Malemort le 15 Mai 1622 sous le titre de
« Notre Dame de Pitié »
En 1776, les Pénitents Blancs construisirent leur propre chapelle à côté de celle de Sainte Anne, et dès lors les deux chapelles se confondirent, la Communauté y maintenant le cimetière.
1845 – Souscription pour une statue dédiée à Notre Dame de Pitié.
1819 – rachat de la chapelle qui avait été vendue comme bien national et transformée en bergerie.
Appel aux dons pour sa restauration, (en vain….)
La chapelle des Pénitents Blancs fut démolie seulement en 1969.
La statue qui était au dessus de la porte d’entrée de la chapelle sera sauvée et placée dans le
clocheton de la même chapelle en 1975 lors de l’aménagement de la « place des pénitents »
