La Porte des pénitents

Cette ouverture n’est pas à proprement parler une porte, mais une brèche ouverte dans les remparts, face à ce qui était la chapelle des Pénitents Blancs. Cette ouverture pratiquée de façon sommaire et sans recherche d’esthétique, date de la fin du dix-huitième siècle. Puisqu’il est mentionné dans un registre des délibérations du Conseil en 1790 « qu’une garde sera montée de nuit devant les trois portes, afin de veiller sur les sorties nocturnes des habitants qui, en période de vendange, vont la nuit voler du raisin. Elle permettait d’accéder plus rapidement de l’Église au cimetière du lieu.

The Gate of the Penitents

This opening is not strictly speaking a door, but an open breach in the ramparts, facing what was the chapel of the White Penitents. This opening practiced in a basic way seems to date from the end of the 18th century. Indeed, as it is mentioned in a register from 1790  “Patrols were done at night in front of the three doors, in order to watch over inhabitants who were stealing grapes in harvest times”

The door was also created in order to allow easier and faster access to the church and the cemetery for inhabitants.
